"I was talking to an MIS director of a Fortune 500 company that employed several persons who were blind that used computers running Microsoft Windows and a screen reader. For those people reading this who are not familiar with how a person blind uses a computer it is done by using a keyboard for input, and all information on the screen is spoken back to them for output. This MIS director and his software programmers had upgraded their reservation system which both persons sighted, and persons blind used to take reservations. Two weeks after that he saw a report that showed how many reservations were being completed by all employees and it showed that the persons who were blind were 20 percent more efficient. In other words, persons who were blind were opening and closing reservations 20% faster than their sighted co-workers."
The MIS director was blown away and started to watch how people used their computer system. "He said it took him about 15 minutes to discover the reason. It was the mouse and the fact that they redid their program making it dependent on clicking the mouse. He saw his sighted employees talking to customers as they hands went from the keyboard to the mouse, and back."
They went back to the programmers and removed all mouse commands and made the Windows-based system operate by keyboard only. And that is how the real definition of Technology Airtime was discovered.
Software systems are written every day, and many do not take Technology Airtime into consideration and therefore they operate like a 1962 VW bug going up a hill on a hot day. SO SLOW!
The Gauge for all computers is how much Technology Airtime do they use?
